President's Leadership Program holds middle school leadership conference

CNU students in the President's Leadership Program hosted a leadership conference, "Passing the Torch," for middle school students on April 7.
The CNU students presented leadership workshops, interacted with students and provided other activities centered around leadership education to 32 middle school students from Newport News.
FedEx Freight president and CEO speaks at CNU
FedEx’s employees and its commitment to serving customers have made it so successful, the president and chief operating officer of FedEx Freight told the CNU community on April 5. Douglas Duncan, a 1972 graduate of Christopher Newport College, returned to his alma mater as an Executive-in-Residence at the Joseph W. Luter, III School of Business. His daylong visit included two classroom lectures, several meetings and a community forum in which he discussed the challenges of leadership with an audience of more than 500, made up mostly of students, at the Ferguson Center for the Arts.
President Trible selected as Bay Days Commodore
President Trible will lead the Hampton Bay Days festival Sept. 8 through Sept. 10. The festival is a three-day celebration designed to educate the public about the importance of the Chesapeake Bay while providing a day-long destination that’s fun and family-friendly. Citizens can learn about conservation efforts through hands-on activities, sporting and water events, environmental education, and children’s activities. There will be live entertainment, fireworks, a juried art show and much more.
Students launch independent news organization
A volunteer staff of about 30 students launched an independent student-run online news organization, www.cnuhook.com, in March. Students will generate ideas, content, photographs, and all other features for the site. According to Jenn Rowell, editor and executive director, students will pursue new ideas and stretch the boundaries of traditional journalism.

Student selected for New York fellowship
Abbie Tang, a senior English major and political science minor at Christopher Newport University, is one of 25 students selected from 800 applicants from across the country for The International Radio and Television Society Foundation’s Summer Fellowship Program. The fellowship, which takes place in New York City, begins with an extensive one-week orientation to broadcasting, cable, advertising, and new media.
Student wins statewide vocal competition
Freshman vocal performance major Jake Mills won first place in the freshmen men category in the spring vocal auditions at the state competition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, March 3-4 at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va. Not only did Mills win his category, but he also was the only singer out of his group to receive an honors classification. He placed in the honors category at the regional National Association of Teachers of Singing conference on April 8 at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C.
ArtCNU’s Professor Morrison takes top honors in show
Photography Professor Phil Morrison won Best in Show at the Suffolk Photography Exhibition in March. Also participating in the show were student Chad Hill, Ryan Burke and Nancy Sellers.
Program receives $175,000 grant
Dr. Stavroula Kostaki-Gailey of the Mathematics Department, has been awarded $175,000 in a Mathematics and Science Partnership grant for the ALGEA, Algebra and Geometry for All, project. The project, developed as a partnership between CNU, Newport News and Hampton public schools, is intended to upgrade the algebra and geometry content knowledge of 30 special education teachers who teach mathematics to learning-disabled students and 15 paraprofessionals who work with learning-disabled students on a one-to-one basis.
SIFE team named First Runner-Up

After presenting a report of their year-long community outreach projects to a panel of business leaders, the CNU Students in Free Enterprise team was named First Runner Up in the regional SIFE competition on April 3 in Charlotte, N.C. |
The students described their several outreach projects – including teaching financial education, ethics and entrepreneurship for teens at the Newport News Boys & Girls Club. The CNU presenters were Jessica Medlen, Kelli McGeorge, Jake Harris, and Derek Francis Diamond. The IT specialist was Amber Hoback. David Russo, Rachel Johns and Lillian Ziehl were participants in the year-long SIFE projects.
Professor publishes book
A new book, "A Vintage Postcard Tour of Newport News” by Dr. Harold Cones, chairman of the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Science, will be published this spring.
First-year history major to present research at two conferences
Nicole Justice, a first-year history major, has been selected to present her research paper, “The Malleus Maleficarum’s dissemination of misogyny throughout European society” at the Undergraduate Research and Prospective Graduate Student Conference on April 18 at Virginia Tech. She also will present at the Mid-Atlantic Social Undergraduate Research conference on April 20 at Villanova University.
Professor discusses tax program on TV news program
Gabriele Lingenfelter, accounting, economic and finance instructor, appeared live on WVEC-TV's 13 News at Noon TV program on April 5. She discussed the University's free tax service on the Community Chat program. Taxpayers were able to have their tax returns prepared and e-filed for free by volunteers from the Joseph W. Luter, III School of Business.
Music student’s paper accepted at conference
Stevie Nelson, music history and literature major, has had her paper, “Holy Ghost Boogie: Music of Jimmy Swaggart,” accepted for the Music of the South Conference organized by the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi, in Oxford, Miss. She wrote and submitted her winning abstract under the guidance of Dr. Brana Mijatovich, director of World Music Studies.
Graduate accepted in London
Jennifer Lawrence, May 2004 double major in political science and Spanish, was accepted into the London School of Economics.

Daniel Anker, director of the documentary “Imaginary Witness: Hollywood and the Holocaust,” will speak following the screening of his 2004 documentary that documents Hollywood’s denial and side-stepping of events that lead to the Holocaust.

Sprinter, coach honored
Sprinter Karen Simon was named the South/Southeast Region Female Athlete of the Year; and Head Coach Louis Johnson was voted Women's South/Southeast Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Fogarty sets new school record in one-mile run
Track athlete Megan Fogarty set another new school record in the one-mile. Fogarty, a senior, lowered her school record to 4:57.27. Additionally, this time improved her to the #5 position in the nation on the national qualifying list.
