Megan Murray
CNU Athlete Accepted to Oxford
Megan Murray, a member of the CNU sailing team, has been accepted to study at Oxford University this spring. Murray is a junior political science major who will spend the spring 2006 term at Harris Manchester College of the University of Oxford in Oxford, England.
CNU launches comprehensive online events calendar
Everyone across campus and in the community now has instant, online access to scheduled events and detailed event information – all from a single, centralized calendar.
CNU Welcomes vice president for University Advancement and University Relations
Judy F. Ford will join CNU as Vice President for University Advancement and Relations.
Pancake dinner raises money for Toys for Tots
The annual tradition of Late Night Pancakes, in which faculty and staff volunteers serve pancakes to students studying for exams, raised $1,429.50 for Toys for Tots. Sixty-five faculty and staff members served pancakes and 100 pounds of bacon to 444 students until midnight on Dec. 4. Each person made a $3 minimum donation to support the cause. The Newport Pearls, CNU’s acapella group, also performed.
President Trible on NCAA Presidents Council, transition committee
President Trible has been elected to the Division III Presidents Council of the NCAA. He will serve a four-year term beginning in January, representing the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
Orson Scott Card to speak at 25th Annual Writers' Conference
The international best-selling author of science fiction novels “Ender's Game” and “Ender's Shadow,” Orson Scott Card, is keynote speaker for CNU’s 25th Annual Writers’ conference, which is April 7-8, 2006, at the Ferguson Center for the Arts. Writers are encouraged to enter their unpublished works in the writing contest held in conjunction with the conference. The deadline for entering the contest in Jan. 31, 2006.
Classes, trips, presentations offered for those of retirement age
People of retirement age who have a passion for learning can stretch their minds as well as their muscles with the LifeLong Learning Society’s spring 2006 program.
Magazine-format journal returns to print
DoubleTake, an influential magazine of documentary and literary arts, is returning to publication after a three-year hiatus. The magazine is combining forces with another journal, Points of Entry: Cross-Currents in Storytelling, and will be published by the English department. The new magazine has the familiar look and mission of the old DoubleTake but with an interest in narrative journalism in the newsroom and classroom as well. The premiere Spring 2006 edition of the combined DoubleTake/Points of Entry will be published in January.
Website updates on Warwick construction
The Virginia Department of Transportation will begin construction soon on the Warwick Boulevard Improvement Project in front of CNU. A website has been created to keep the CNU community updated on construction.
SPECIAL RECOGNITION
Vince Brown Track dedicated
The track inside The Freeman Center was officially dedicated on Dec. 4 as Vince Brown Track to honor longtime CNU coach Vince Brown. Brown retired after leading the track and field program for the past 25 years and guiding his squads to 12 national championships.
CNU leads Virginia Music Educators Association
The University now holds the dominant collegiate and college leadership positions in the Virginia Music Educators Association. Amy Holzbach was elected president of the collegiate division of the organization, and Anthony Colosimo was elected vice president. They both are choral music education majors. Dr. Keith Koster, director of music education, was appointed collegiate chair. He will oversee all collegiate chapters in the state. In January, Dr. Mark Reimer, director of music at CNU, will begin his elected term as president of the organization's college division.
Alpha Chi National Honor Society inductions
Fifty-two students were inducted into the Virginia Chapter of Alpha Chi National Honor Society. The chapter elected Jennifer Vencill as president and Nicole Sperlazza as treasurer.
CNU Quest teams compete
Faculty and student teams competed Nov. 16 in the World Affairs Council of Greater Hampton Roads' annual World Quest quiz competition. CNU’s student team, captained by Erin Ireland, finished fourth. The faculty team of Drs. Gil Crippin, Eric Duskin, Stan Hash, Brennan Kraxberger, Mario Mazzarella, Ken Rose and Corliss Tacosa finished behind teams from ODU and The Virginian-Pilot.
CNU students, faculty meet with leadership scholars
Fourteen students and two professors attended the International Leadership Association’s Annual Conference Nov. 2–5 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Each of the students is taking classes to fulfill the requirements of a leadership studies minor and was selected to receive scholarships to attend the conference based on academic performance, leadership service, and interest in studying leadership. The students were accompanied by Dr. Bob Colvin and Dr. Anne Perkins, both leadership studies faculty.
CNU Model UN team takes top honors at competition
The Model United Nations team won half of all the awards presented at the Pan American Model UN competition held in early November in Charleston, S.C. The 30-member CNU team won more individual and team awards in this competition than any other event it has participated in, according to Erin Ireland, president of CNUMUN.
Director of grounds wins service award
Dave Kennedy, director of grounds, received the Annual Service Award from the Virginia Association of College and University Housing Officers. Kennedy was selected for the work he and his staff have done to support and serve students. From installing barbecue grills, bike racks and picnic tables, to maintaining volleyball courts and setting up water hose stations for student programs, Kennedy has been responsive to the needs and the interests of students and staff. In honor of this recognition, he received a desk plaque from VACUHO.
Psychology student wins top award
Heather Sutton's research earned a superior rating at an international student research conference on Nov. 5.
Figure skating book by CNU professor soon to be released
Eight years of research and writing culminate this month, as the book “Figure Skating: A History” by Dr. Jim Hines, professor of Music, is published. The book will soon be available from Amazon.com and in bookstores. It can be preordered from the World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame.
Graduate wins achievement award
A CNU graduate, Becky Stewart, received the Women in Business achievement award from Inside Business for her demonstrated leadership, professional accomplishment and her commitment to the community. She is vice president of the submarine program for Northrop Grumman Newport News.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Music

CNU Chamber Choir, Jazz Combo I, University Orchestra and pianist Don Morse will perform in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
University closed for holidays
The University will be closed for the holidays beginning at noon on Dec. 22 and will re-open on Jan. 3.
Main Campus Residence Halls, Barclay and Warwick Suites will reopen on Jan. 15. Students living in CNU Apartments or the Village are encouraged, but not required, to leave for break. Residence Life staff will not be on duty during the break, but University Police will respond to requests for assistance.

Fall sports round-up
Overall, the Captains finished with a 76-26-1 record for the fall 2005. The 74 percent winning percentage is the second highest in CNU history. The University claimed four USA South Conference Championships and sent two teams and one individual to NCAA national competitions.
Women’s Soccer
The women's soccer team lost to VA Wesleyan in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. But defeated Methodist 7-1 in the championship game of the USA South Conference Tournament. They advanced to the championship game of the USA South Conference Tournament for the third consecutive season.
Emily Renkin was named USA South Women's Soccer Player of the Year while Head Coach Kwame Lloyd won his third Coach of the Year award.
Volleyball
Freshman Liz Bush was named USA South Volleyball Rookie of the Year, Jenna Williams was named Libero of the Year, and Head Coach Lindsay Sheppard was named Coach of the Year. The volleyball team won the final three games to capture its second consecutive USA South Conference Tournament Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament, where the team fell to Trinity in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Men’s and women’s cross country
Senior Megan Fogarty finished 77th at the 2005 NCAA Cross Country Championships, the best finish by any CNU cross-country runner in school history. Both the men's and women's cross country teams captured the USA South Conference Championship. Senior Emily Low and freshman Liz Bissell were named USA South Women's Runner of the Year and Rookie of the Year, respectively, while freshman David Woodson was named the USA South Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Year. Head Coach Keith Maurer was named men's and women's Coach of the Year.
Football
After a tough season, which included two nationally ranked opponents, honors abounded for the CNU football squad.
Senior linebacker Justin Wood was named a First Team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association. Wood played for the AFCA’s Division III all-star game, the 2005 Aztec Bowl, on Dec. 17 in Toluca, Mexico. Wood is the second CNU football player to play in the Aztec Bowl, joining Tommy Fitzgerald, who played in last season’s all-star game. He is one of 46 NCAA Division III seniors from around the country who made up this year’s team.
