2005 Graduates

Winter Commencement
Two-hundred and twenty-three students graduated from CNU on Dec. 17. Claude “Chip” A.S. Hornsby III, chief executive of Wolseley’s North American operations and former president and chief executive officer of Ferguson Enterprises, delivered the commencement address during Winter Commencement exercises.

President Trible attends University Presidents Summit
President Paul Trible was one of 120 university presidents invited to attend the U.S. University Presidents Summit on International Education on Jan. 5-6 in Washington, D.C. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings co-hosted the summit to strengthen international education, emphasizing its importance to the national interest. President Bush also addressed the leaders.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Fall Dean's List
Students on the Dean’s List for fall 2005 were enrolled in at least 12 credit hours, have earned no final grade below C, have not received a grade of I or P in any academic subject and have earned a grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale.

Stock Market winners
Area high school students learned about the stock market through a 10-week simulation and were regional winners in the CNU Center for Economic Education's fall 2005 Stock Market Game. Students are given $100,000 in virtual money to “invest” in the stocks of their choice. These CNU winners ranked the highest of 33 area teams.

Faculty publication
The poem, “Parts, Partially Wrapped” by Dr. Jay Paul, professor of English and director of the Honors Program, was published in the Winter 2005 issue of the Powhatan Review.

Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration
7 p.m.Jan. 16 • Music & Theatre Hall, Ferguson Center
Free and open to the public, the commemoration features a candlelight remembrance, a brief showing of King’s "I Have a Dream" speech, and music by the CNU Chamber Choir, Jazz Combo I, University Orchestra and pianist Don Morse.

Faculty Appreciation and Academic Recognition Day
4 p.m.Jan. 28 • The Freeman Center
Student-athletes who have achieved a 3.0 or higher GPA for the fall 2005 semester will be honored at halftime of the men’s basketball game. All faculty are invited to attend and parents of the honored student-athletes will receive free admission to the game.

Ice Hockey Club at Norfolk Scope
3:30 p.m.Feb. 4 • Norfolk Scope
CNU’s Ice Hockey Club will compete against the College of William and Mary at the Norfolk Scope arena, the home of the Norfolk Admirals professional hockey team. Tickets are $13 for two games: the CNU game and the Admirals game that follows at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by sending an e-mail to hockey@cnu.edu.

Alex Gibney, documentary

The Emmy-award winning filmmaker, director and producer Alex Gibney will speak following the screening of his documentary film, “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” as part of the Dean William Parks Colloquium.

Captain Chris USA South Conference celebrates 25 years of women's sports
The 2005-06 academic year marks the 25th anniversary of women's athletics in the USA South Athletic Conference. Nineteen former CNU athletes were named to the 25th Anniversary Teams. Honorees included five basketball players, four soccer players, five softball players, three tennis and two volleyball players.

Men's Basketball
The men's basketball team captured the ninth annual Point Plaza Suites/Captains Shootout. Juniors Donta Seldon and Korey Lewis were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Women's Basketball
The Lady Captains fell to 6-5 with a loss in the championship game of the Southern Virginia Tournament.

Sailing
Sailing finished third at the Nokia Sugar Bowl Regatta at Georgia Tech. CNU defeated Notre Dame, Michigan State, Georgia Tech, Georgia and Florida.

Hall of Fame induction
The Athletics Department will induct the following members of the Hall of Fame Class of 2006 on Feb. 11 in The Freeman Center during halftime of the men’s basketball game:
