Alumni Society sponsors 5K Race and Mile Walk

RunnersThe Alumni Society and the Peninsula Track Club present the annual CNU Alumni Society/ Oyster Pointer 5K Race and Mile Walk on Sept. 16. This PTC Grand Prix event follows a flat, fast course through the beautiful Riverside community. The walk begins at 8 a.m., and the run at 8:30 a.m. at the parking garage of CNU’s Ferguson Center for the Arts.

Early registration for the walk is $8 and the run is $15 through Sept. 11. After that, the prices go up to $10 and $20. Students and military personnel are $10. Please call race director Michael Koontz at (757) 989-2952 or visit alumni.cnu.edu for more information.

CNU kicks off Jamestown 2007 commemoration this fall
Jamestown EventsA long-planned series of events to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in America begins at CNU on Oct. 4 with a discussion of Virginia Indians of the Chesapeake Region by leading historians and an exhibit of Virginia Indian artwork at the Ferguson Center for the Arts.

Other upcoming events in the year-long series, “Points of Contact and Culture: Jamestown, 1607-2007,” are historians’ discussions, an all-day bus tour, a portrayal of Thomas Jefferson, and the world premiere of a new play by CNU professor Steven Breese based on the life of Christopher Newport. The University also will sponsor a film series highlighting European-Indian relations during the age of colonization.

Cultural exchange program brings North African students to CNU
College students from Morocco and Algeria learned about American culture by spending the month of July at CNU. In addition to classroom learning, the 20 North African students learned about American history and government, American culture and Virginia’s ecology through excursions and site visits. Twenty CNU students who lived and studied with the North African students will travel to Morocco next summer for the second phase of the program.

Project helps teachers of learning-disabled students
Thirty special education teachers and 15 paraprofessionals from Newport News and Hampton came to CNU on July 31 to Aug. 10 to increase their math knowledge. The ALGEA, Algebra and Geometry for All, project was developed as a partnership between CNU, Newport News and Hampton public schools to upgrade the algebra and geometry content knowledge of those who teach mathematics to learning-disabled students and who work with learning-disabled students on a one-to-one basis.

LifeLong Learning Society offers classes, trips, fun for retirees
LLSThe LifeLong Learning Society’s fall semester offers members the choice of 39 five-week and two 10-week courses covering topics such as "Einstein, Quantum Physics & Schrödinger’s Cat," "From Plankton to Planet: The Ocean’s Role in Global Change," and "Pancho Villa & the Mexican Revolution of 1910." Also included are classes in yoga, languages, computers, photography, painting, music and much more. Field trips take participants to Atlanta and other cities of the South, the Frontier Culture Museum and James Madison’s “Montpelier.” The fall 2006 session begins with a lecture by JoAnn Falletta, music director of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, on Aug. 30.

Parents CouncilThe CNU Parents Council, an organization of parents of current and/or past CNU students, provides leadership to advance the university and enhance the student experience. Professor's new book features vintage postcards
Dr. Harold Cones' bookA new book by CNU’s Dr. Harold Cones, “Newport News: A Vintage Postcard Tour,” published in May by Schiffer Publishing, features 250 mostly original color postcards covering the city's history, industry, recreation and culture from the 1890s through World War II. The postcards are all part of Cones’ collection. Dr. Cones will sign copies of his book beginning at 7 p.m. on Aug. 25 at the Barnes and Noble bookstore at 12170 Jefferson Ave., near the Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News.

History student to present research
Nicole Justice, a history major, has been selected to present her recent research at the 31st International Patristic, Medieval and Renaissance Studies Conference in October at Villanova University.

Ferguson Center is tops in design competition
College Planning & Management magazine named the Ferguson Center for the Arts the 2006 Grand Prize Winner in the 7th Annual Education Design Showcase.

Graduates named meritorious teacher candidates
Six graduates from CNU’s Master of Arts in Teaching program have been named Meritorious New Teacher Candidates. The designation from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Teachers Project recognizes graduates who are tops in the nation on measures of effective teaching, including verbal skills and mastery of their subject matter, and who complete with distinction their state-approved preparation program and 400 hours of supervised clinical experience.

Professor featured on "With Good Reason"
Dr. James ReedDr. James Reed, CNU professor of biology, chemistry and environmental science, discussed his research into the behavior of dolphins in the waterways of Hampton Roads on “With Good Reason,” the statewide public radio program. The program airs the week of July 29-Aug. 4. Check statewide air times.

Athletic Communications Office wins national awards
CNU’s Athletic Communications Office recently received five national awards for excellence in publications. The awards were presented by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Moreland named co-pitcher of week
CNU baseball player Kenny Moreland was recently named the Coastal Plains League Rawlings Co-Pitcher of the Week.

Football selected to finish second
CNU’s football program was selected by the coaches to finish second in the 2006 USA South Coaches Poll.
