The York High Alumni Association Establishes Scholarship
The York High Alumni Association, Inc. recently presented a check for $25,000 to endow a scholarship at CNU. Students from York High School will have preference for the scholarship, which will be matched through a scholarship challenge gift to CNU.

Sociology Professor Receives Fulbright Scholar Award
Dr. Joseph F. Healey, professor of Sociology and chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at CNU, was awarded a Fulbright Scholar Program grant to teach courses in research methods and minority relations at Uzhorod National University in Uzhgorod, Ukraine.
CNU Introduces Learning Communities for First-Year Students
CNU is unveiling one of the most innovative student success programs yet — Learning Communities (LCs) for first-year students, which debuts this fall. Students in these communities will live together, take classes together and be guided by an upperclass student who is dedicated to their academic success. FAQ’s and a First Year Student Course Selection Guidebook are available on the LC website.

University Advancement Hires Three New Staff Members
University Advancement welcomes three to their staff. Nick Taylor, the advancement services manager, recently earned his MFA from UVA where he was also an instructor in fiction writing. Jeannette Weaver, the director of development for Ferguson Center for the Arts, joins the Advancement Team from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. And new Director of Development Matt McKinney hails from Notre Dame Law School. Contact Advancement staff.
CNU is proud to present the Dean's List for the Spring 2005 semester. These honor students were enrolled in at least 12 credit hours, have earned no final grade below C, have not received a grade of I or P in any academic subject and have earned a grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale.
Dr. George K. Zestos, associate professor of management and economics at Christopher Newport University recently published European Monetary Integration: The Euro. He collaborated with students on the book, which provides an overview of the economic and monetary integration in Europe as well as investigates the euro's impact on the world.
The CNU nomination committee has selected Ms. Kristina Dandy for the 2005 Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship Competition. This summer, more than 1,200 students will compete for approximately 65 Graduate Scholarships.
Three Christopher Newport University Sociology students took home honors for the posters they created as part of the PRAXIS Service Learning project.

The 5th Annual Alumni Society/ Oyster Pointer 5k Fall Classic will be held Saturday, September 17. Registration begins at 6:30am and the race beings at 8am in the parking lot behind the Ferguson Center for the Arts (adjacent to the parking garage). Early registration is $15 if received by 9/9/05 or is $18 thereafter. The cost is $8 for all military and students. All proceeds go toward scholarships. More information will be online soon.

Finding Destiny at CNU
Meet Becky Chappell of Fredericksburg, VA. Becky graduated from CNU on
May 7 with a B.A. in Early Childhood Psychology. She is currently
enrolled in the Master’s program for teaching at CNU and was married on
May 21. Becky met her husband Chris at CNU while involved in leadership
through InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Chris (’03) graduated with a
B.A. in History and is a teacher at Menchville High School. In regards
to meeting Chris, Becky said “CNU is where I belonged.” Read their love story. |

Athletic Director C.J. Woollum announces the hiring of RON GARNER as the school's new track and field head coach.
The Christopher Newport University football squad is ranked 22nd in the nation in Division III, according to Lindy's annual pre-season college football yearbook.
Senior baseball pitcher Mike Cosby earned First Team All-State honors. Five of his teammates were named Honorable Mention All-State and include John Corbin, Ricky Medina, Brad Melton, Jason Moody and Kenny Moreland. The Captains finished 2005 with an overall record of 25-16 and 11-8 in the USA South.
Wayne Block, a member of the CNU athletic department for the last 22 years, has been named the 2005 recipient of the Warren Berg Award. This national award recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of college sports information and honors those who have brought dignity and prestige to the profession.
