CNU Professor Receives 2007 Outstanding Faculty Award

Dr. Tracey Schwarze, associate professor of English, has been named one of 12 recipients of the 2007 Outstanding Faculty Awards from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. The award is the Commonwealth’s highest honor for faculty at Virginia’s public and private colleges and universities, and it recognizes Dr. Schwarze’s superior accomplishments in teaching, research and public service. |
Student wins $23,000 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship
Philip Leclerc, a junior at CNU, has won a $23,000 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship for 2007-2008, permitting him to study at the University of Dal El Salaam in Tanzania during the 2007-2008 academic year.
CNU Students published in book on Microsoft Operating System

Two seniors at CNU recently wrote chapters in "Special Edition Using® Microsoft® Windows Vista™", a book by Robert Cowart and Brian Knittel for users of Microsoft’s latest operating system. Brent Thal and Everette Beatley, computer engineering majors at CNU, tested Windows Vista™ for Microsoft for two years prior to its public release into the market last month. Beatley also created an accompanying 80-minute CD presenting an overview of Windows Vista™. |
CNU Business Students Sweep National Case of the Year
For the third consecutive year, students in the Small Business Institute (SBI) Program at CNU's Joseph W. Luter, III School of Business have won top honors in a national business consulting competition. The “Showcase” Award, an honor that recognizes an outstanding small business program in the nation, was presented to the SBI Program. This is the third straight year that CNU students have won a prestigious first place award and the first time CNU has swept both award categories.
English professor receives NEH Fellowship
Assistant Professor of English Sharon Rowley, Ph.D., received a prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Fellowship for her research into a group of relatively neglected Old English historical manuscripts. Dr. Rowley is the first faculty member at CNU to receive this highly competitive award. The $40,000 grant was one of only 153 awarded this year out of 1,398 applications to the NEH program.
LifeLong Learning Society hosts trip to China
See the Great Wall, Forbidden City and enjoy an introduction to Chinese life in the Shandong Province through visits to factories, farms and villages. Mr. Stephen Louie, a retired advisor for ExxonMobil Corp., is escorting the trip which will take place September 9-24, 2007. Participants do not have to be members of the CNU LifeLong Learning Society to go on the trip. The LifeLong Learning Society website contains registration information and a detailed itinerary.
CNU students provide free tax services
Taxpayers can have their tax returns prepared and e-filed for free by volunteers from Christopher Newport University's Joseph W. Luter, III School of Business. Services are offered in the SunTrust Building on the CNU campus beginning February 1 until April 16. No appointment is necessary.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION
CNU students make presentation at International Leadership Association's Global Conference
In November 2006, ten CNU students-- Brandon Bowman, Brad Campbell, Kathryn Dolan, Jennifer Dierberger, Alencia Johnson, Justin Pritchett, Kelly Scallion, Stephen Shaw, Camilla Shelton, and Rachel Snively -- spent three days in Chicago at the International Leadership Association (ILA) Global Annual Conference. The ILA is the top scholarly organization in the field of leadership studies.
Virginia Peninsula Literary Consortium
Mary Sellen, CNU Librarian and Izabela Cieszynski, Director of the Newport News Public Library System spearheaded an initiative to create the Virginia Peninsula Literary Consortium, which consists of Christopher Newport University; Thomas Nelson Community College and the public library systems of Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson and York County; and Peninsula Reads. These participants have pledged to work collaboratively in grant development, staff training and author events. Through the efforts of the Consortium, "The Big Read" grant in the amount of $18,000 was awarded to the Newport News Public Library System to serve as community coordinator for all the partners.
Students recognized for exemplary grades
CNU has announced the Dean’s List for the fall 2006 semester. These honor students were enrolled in at least 12 credit hours, have earned no final grade below a C, have not received a grade of I or P in any academic subject and have earned a grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale.
Professor of business speaks to Financial Planning Association of Hampton Roads
Dr. Arthur Gudikunst, associate professor of business for Christopher Newport University’ s Joseph W. Luter, III School of Business, recently presented a talk on “Hedge Funds: Returns and Risks, the Reality and the Myths” to the Financial Planning Association of Hampton Roads.

Golf Classic and Auction
The Alumni Society and CNU’s Educational Foundation will host the Inaugural CNU Scholarship Golf Classic and Auction, to be held March 24, 2007, at the James River Country Club. Proceeds go toward scholarships.

Senior Class Challenge 2007
The Senior Class Challenge Team launched their class gift campaign in February to help support CNU. Each senior will be asked to contribute $20.07 to the university. Seniors are encouraged to give $50.00 or more and receive one year of free membership to the alumni society. For gifts over $100.00, seniors will be invited to a private cocktail party with the Alumni Society Board of Directors. Each contributor receives numerous benefits. ATHLETICS
Six basketball players named All-Conference
Six CNU basketball players were named All-Conference, the USA South announced this month. From the women’s team, senior guard Nikki Rowland was named First Team All-USA South. Candace Bryant was a Second Team All-USA South choice and Alicia Bessey was named Honorable Mention All-Conference. From the men’s team, senior Korey Lewis was named First Team All-USA South. Senior Donta Selden and sophomore Davon Barton were named Second Team All-Conference.
Baker named USA South Rookie of the Week
CNU's men's basketball player Theo Baker was named the USA South's Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week, the conference announced this month. Baker helped CNU defeat Shenandoah 85-75 when he tallied 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field, including two three-point shots. He also had three assists and one rebound in the win.
Collins named State Player of the Year
Volleyball player Brittany Collins was named the 2007 State Player of the Year, the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association announced this month. Collins was also a First Team All-USA South pick and a First Team All-State choice this year. She is the first player in program history to earn First Team All-South honors and became the first All-American in program history when she was named to the Honorable Mention squad.
Women’s lacrosse selected as USA South favorite
The women's lacrosse team was picked to finish first in the 2007 USA South Preseason poll released this month. The Lady Captains, under the direction of Head Coach Kwame Lloyd, finished 11-8 overall and 5-1 in conference play last year. CNU reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
Men’s lacrosse wins inaugural game
The men's lacrosse team won its first ever game in its first season as the Captains held off a late rally by Marymount to defeat the Saints, 9-8.
