Captain ChrisSpring season roundup

The men’s basketball team won its 12th USA South championship with a thrilling, 89-88, overtime victory against Averett in The Freeman Center. The Captains then made their 16th appearance in the NCAA event where they fell to 18th-ranked Lincoln (Pa.) on the road, 102-96. CNU completed its season with a 20-8 record.

The women’s basketball team improved from 10-16 in 2004-05 to 17-9 this season with a team that had no seniors.

Tennis became the highlight of the spring season as both the CNU men and women captured USA South championships. The women completed a spectacular 16-1 season by defeating Methodist, 6-1, in the conference championship match. Meanwhile, the CNU men won both the regular season and tournament championship titles. The Captains defeated Methodist, 4-2, to win the conference crown. The victories for both teams are especially noteworthy as Methodist has a professional tennis management concentration in its business administration major. The men finished with a 14-6 record.

The women’s lacrosse team also won the USA South title and earned its first bid to the NCAA Championships. CNU defeated Greensboro, 10-9, in overtime to win the conference title with a 10-6 record. The new CNU men’s lacrosse team will begin varsity competition in 2006-07.

The golf team had its best showing since 1993-94 by placing second in the USA South Championships. The conference annually produces about four nationally ranked teams a year.

The softball team finished its season with a 23-17 record for its 17th consecutive winning season and 20-victory year, while the baseball team is bidding for its 10th consecutive winning and 20-victory season with a 17-16 record with six games remaining to be played.

In track and field, CNU won the Dixie Conference Championships and competed in the NCAA Track National Championships, where freshman Rachael Clark finished fourth in the nation in the women’s shot put.
