CNU recognized for improving life in Hampton Roads

The Hampton Roads Association for Commercial Real Estate gave CNU its “Committee’s Choice Award” Excellence in Design Award for making an outstanding contribution to the quality of life in the region. Also receiving awards were POMOCO Stadium and the Ferguson Center for
the Arts, which has received four other major awards recently.
Open house, Homecoming a success

CNU hosted its first Open House of the season on Oct. 21. More than 500 guests were greeted by bright sunshine, Homecoming festivities, and by President Paul Trible, faculty, staff and students in the Ferguson Center for the Arts. Families came for the Open House from every part of Virginia and New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Hundreds of Alumni enjoyed tailgate parties before the Homecoming game, cheered on the Captains as they beat Methodist College, and mingled at the post-game bash in the new Alumni House. Additional Fall Open Houses and Alumni tailgate parties are scheduled for Nov. 4 and Nov. 11.
Wind Ensemble to represent Newport News in Germany
The Wind Ensemble will perform in Germany in December, making it the first ensemble from Newport News to perform at Ernst Moritz Arndt University in Greifswald, Germany. The group also will perform in Pfaffenhofen and Stuttgart, Germany.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION
Silver Storm wins competition
Silver Storm, CNU's dance team, was named Most Collegiate and Most Improved at the Universal Dance Association dance camp held July 28-30 at the University of Tennessee. The team also won a first place for its home routine and a Superior trophy for gold ribbons that individual team members won on dances that were taught at camp.
Student teacher gets teaching scholarship
Melissa Baird, a graduate from the Master of Arts in Teaching Program, was awarded the Richard A. Meade Student Teaching Scholarship for 2006-2007. This award is given by the Virginia Association of Teachers of English based on academic merit and faculty recommendations.
CNU student chosen for masterclass
Kenneth Heinemeir, a student of CNU Professor of Violin and Associate Concertmaster Yun Zhang of The Virginia Symphony, was chosen as the collegiate violinist to perform on the masterclass given by world-renowned violinist Leila Josefowicz on Oct. 27 at the Ferguson Center. Collegiate students from the College of William and Mary, Hampton University and CNU competed for the masterclass.
CNU professor receives award
Aldo Forte, professor of music composition, received the ASCAPLUC Award for the 2006-2007 academic year from The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. This award is granted based on a writer’s catalog of original compositions as well as recent performances in areas not surveyed by the Society.
Multiple roles for religion professor
Graham M. Schweig, CNU’s associate professor of religion, is serving his second academic year as the visiting associate professor of Sanskrit at the University of Virginia in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures. Last spring, he also delivered the Wahlstrom Lecture and was the Tamal Krishna Goswami Visiting Fellow for the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, The University of Oxford, Oxford, U.K.
ATHLETICS
Field hockey team ranks nationally for first time
CNU’s field hockey team is ranked15th in the newest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Top 20 poll.
Captains win in Homecoming
The CNU football team came up with three red zone stops on fourth down en route to a 21-0 win over Methodist in the homecoming game. However, their six-game winning streak come to a halt on Oct. 28 when they dropped a 46-34 decision at NC Wesleyan.
Men's and women's basketball teams rank high in USA South polls
CNU's men's basketball team was picked to finish first again in the 2006-2007 USA South Preseason poll released Oct. 18. The women's basketball team was picked to finish second in the 2006 USA South Women's Basketball Preseason Poll.
Men's basketball will open the season by hosting York on Nov. 17. The Lady Captains' first home game is Nov. 21 against Virginia Wesleyan.
Cross country sweeps USA South Championships
CNU's men's and women's cross country squads both captured the 2006 USA South Championship on Oct. 28.
Men's soccer captures USA South regular season title
CNU's men's soccer team captured its first USA South regular season title since the 2000 season by tying NC Wesleyan 1-1 in double overtime on Oct. 28.

Film: 'Black Robe'

The next showing in the Jamestown 2007 film series features the 1991 film that examines the journey of French missionaries as they travel with Algonquian Indians down the St. Lawrence River in Canada. The movie highlights the profoundly different world-views possessed by Indians and Europeans in the 1600s. The films and post-movie discussions led by CNU faculty members are free and open to the public. |
