Business students take home the gold
A team of CNU business students has earned first place in a major direct marketing contest. A panel of judges from the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation selected CNU's marketing campaign, "Sharing a Slice of the Orange," as the top pick of undergraduate submissions from 150 entries from colleges and universities across the country for the 2005 Leonard J. Raymond Collegiate Gold ECHO. Read more >>

Coach from 'Remember the Titans' to speak at Christopher Newport University
Coach Herman Boone, whose story was the basis for the film “Remember the Titans,” will share his message of respect, teamwork, community involvement and the importance of character at the Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall at 7 p.m. on Oct. 14. The film, in which Boone was portrayed by Academy Award-winner Denzel Washington, will be shown immediately following Boone’s speech. Both events are free and open to the public.

Lifehouse band to perform on campus
The alternative rock band Lifehouse will perform at 8 p.m. on Oct. 15 in The Freeman Center. The band’s third album “Lifehouse” spawned its current top 10 hit "You and Me," which has been on Billboard's Top 40 list for 32 weeks. Tickets for students are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Tickets for general public are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets are available for purchase at the Freeman Center Box Office or online.

Ferguson Center for the Arts celebrates successful opening
The Ferguson Center for the Arts had a superb first week, bringing in more than $2 million in ticket sales. The grand opening night on Sept. 12 with Michael Crawford and the two performances by the Irish Tenors and Bruce Hornsby set a new standard for world-class entertainment in Hampton Roads. On Sept. 24, the Parsons Dance Company presented a world-premiere performance set to music of the Dave Matthews Band, which was commissioned by the Ferguson Center to celebrate the opening of the Concert Hall. Marvin Hamlisch, the principal pops conductor for the Pittsburgh Symphony and National Symphony Orchestras who has won every major award for his composing, performed on Oct. 1. The Ferguson Center was also spotlighted on a weather segment by NBC Today Show's Willard Scott.

Tea House moving to Newport News Park
The Japanese Tea House in Virginia is getting a new home. The tea house, which has resided on campus since 1989, will be moved this fall to the Peace Garden at Newport News Park. CNU has been working for several years to find a new home for the tea house, which is a reproduction of the Ennan Tea House, a landmark in Kyoto, Japan.

 

SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Dr. Lisa Spiller has been chosen as the 2005 Outstanding Direct Marketing Educator
Dr. Lisa SpillerSpiller, professor of marketing, earned the annual award because of her contributions to direct and interactive marketing through teaching and research. The award is given by the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation’s Board of Trustees. Spiller plans to receive the award and $1,000 prize at the Direct Marketing Educators’ Conference luncheon Oct. 16 in Atlanta. As the award recipient, she will serve as the educational liaison to The Direct Marketing Educational Foundation Board of Trustees for a one-year term.

CNU professor addressed the impact of teen soap operas
Dr. Michaela D.E. Meyer spoke about teen soap operas on With Good Reason, Virginia’s only statewide public radio program. She discussed the impact that many popular shows have on teens, including shows such as “The O.C.,” “One Tree Hill” and “ Beverly Hills 90210.”

An article by Dr. Clyde Brockett, emeritus professor of music, has appeared in English in Études Grégoriennes, the journal of the Gregorian foundation at Solesmes Monastery, France. The study, “A Repertory of Processional Antiphons in Vienna Nationalbibliothek ms. 1888,” concerns the contents of the earliest book devoted principally to music for processions, which originated in the 960s at St. Alban’s Monastery, Mainz, Germany.

This month, CNU alumnus Martin Zelada was sworn into office as a Norfolk Police Officer after finishing six months of training at the Police Officer Training Academy in Norfolk. He chose his CNU soccer coach and mentor Steve Shaw to pin on his police badge for the first time.

At the Holocaust MuseumThe students in Dr. Anthony Santoro's class, titled The Nazi State and the Holocaust, traveled to Washington, D.C., to tour the permanent exhibition at the museum and do research on their term papers in the museum's extensive library.

Keith McLoughland Great Books series

Anyone who is interested in discussing literature and pursuing truth is invited to attend the fall sessions of the Keith McLoughland Great Books series. On Oct. 5, Dr. John Thompson will discuss Matsuo Basho’s “The Narrow Road to the Great Interior” and on Oct. 19, Professor Richard Guthrie will discuss “The Plague.” Print copies of all readings are available through the CNU Bookstore, on reserve at the library or digitally through the website www.cnu.edu/great_books/.

Falk Gallery Exhibit
The exhibits of paintings by Ann Segaloff will be on display Oct. 14 to Nov. 11. "People: Doing Their Thing" will be displayed in the Falk Gallery. "The Artist's Love Affair with Italy" will be housed in the Ferguson Center hall gallery.

Emmy-award-winning director Slawomir Grünberg will speak following the screening of his film, "School Prayer: A Community at War."

Residence Hall Trick or Treats

Alumni, faculty and staff – bring your children to trick-or-treat in the residence halls. Each of the six residential areas’ floor decorations will be judged, and one winner from each area will be selected to win a pizza party for residents. Judging starts at 5 p.m.

CNU ATHLETICS Sports Shorts

Captain ChrisSix CNU Athletes Named USA South Athlete Of The Week

CNU defensive back Rob Rodriguez was named to the d3football.com Team of the Week.

Field hockey player Annie Gehring was named Division III Rookie of the Week on Oct. 3 by Womensfieldhockey.com.

CNU’s football team prepares for its homecoming game against Chowan. The game will take place at 1 p.m., Oct. 15, at POMOCO Stadium.

Christopher Newport's women's cross country team finished second while the men placed fifth at the 2005 NYU Invitational.

The CNU women’s soccer team was ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III South Region. The CNU men’s soccer team was ranked seventh.

CNU's field hockey team captured its third straight win Sunday defeating Washington & Lee 4-1.

CNU's volleyball team defeated cross-water rival VA Wesleyan 3-1.

The sailing team placed 10th at the 2005 Tom Curtis Memorial Regatta held Oct. 1-2 at Goergetown University.
