Student Union is officially opened, named

The impressive 116,000-square-foot, three-story David Student Union was dedicated by President Paul Trible on Sept. 9 during the University’s annual Family Weekend. In a morning address to families and other members of the CNU community, President Trible announced the naming of the David Student Union in honor of William R. and Goldie R. David.

New students initiated at Academic Day
First-year and transfer students were introduced to academic life at CNU through Academic Day on Aug. 17. Events included motivating testimonials from current students and graduates, an Academic Festival where academic departments had interactive exhibits and where students could win raffle prizes, lunch with faculty in departments, a treasure hunt, honor code case study discussions with faculty, and faculty-led discussions of the common reading “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer.
Parents Council offers opportunities for leadership
The CNU Parents Council, an organization of parents of current and/or past CNU students, provides leadership to advance the university and enhance the student experience. Members are involved in four critical areas (committees): Career Development, Programming, Membership Recruitment and Development. Your support will make a difference! SPECIAL RECOGNITION
Director presents poster at meeting
Lisa Wingfield, Trieshmann Health and Fitness Pavilion director, presented a poster – “Differences in VO2 Between Kickboxing and Treadmill Exercise at Similar Heart Rates” – based on her thesis research at the American College of Sports Medicine 53rd Annual Meeting on June 2 in Denver, Colo. Wingfield was awarded the Master of Education in physical education (exercise science concentration) in May from Old Dominion University.
Professor’s research presented in Germany
Clyde Brockett, emeritus professor of music, presented his work, “The Repertory of Processional Antiphons,” at the Cantus Planus meeting Aug. 28 – Sept. 4 at the Benedictine Abbey of Niederaltaich in Regensburg, Germany.
Dissertation named most outstanding
Research by Dr. Brian Puaca, assistant professor of history, on West Germany has been named the most outstanding dissertation on the history of education for 2006. The dissertation on how West Germany became a democratic society after World War II won the 2006 Claude A. Eggertsen dissertation prize from the History of Education Society. Research by professor, students to be published in top journal
An article by Dr. Quentin Kidd, associate professor of government and public affairs, and his students Megan Murray, senior political science major; Mehreen Farooq, senior political science major; and Gus Diggs, senior psychology major, has been accepted for publication in the March 2007 edition of Social Science Quarterly.
Rising seniors receive scholarships
Three students from the Department of Communication Studies received scholarships for 2006-07. Kelly Scallion received the Cooper-Hubbard Scholarship, and Cara Moser and Ashley Forish received the Communication Studies Scholarship.
Undergraduate’s paper published
A paper written by Sam Skalak,
a biology major, was published
in “The Science Creative Quarterly,”
an online journal hosted by
the University of British Columbia.
Graduate’s paper earns top honor
A paper written by Kristen Harding, a spring 2006 graduate of the Department of Communication Studies, has been selected as the 2006 Organization for the Study of Communication, Language and Gender’s Outstanding Undergraduate Paper. This is the second year a CNU communication studies student has won this award. Madelin “Rosie” Russo, a May 2005 graduate, won the award last year. The conference will be Oct. 12-16 in St. Louis, Mo.
Undergraduate to present research
The continuing research of Nicole Justice on the spread of misogyny in European society has been selected for the 31st International Patristic, Medieval, and Renaissance Studies Conference. An undergraduate student, Justice will be presenting her research alongside graduate students. The conference is Oct. 13-15 at Villanova University.
Fishing Club tops in nation
CNU’s Fishing Club has placed as one of the top 10 collegiate teams in the nation and qualified to compete in the American Bass Anglers 2006 National Championship to be held Oct. 1-6 at Kentucky Lake, in Paris, Tenn.

Historians Panel Discussion on Virginia Indians of the Chesapeake Region

CNU kicks off its year-long series of events to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in America, Jamestown 2007, with a discussion of Virginia Indians of the Chesapeake Region by leading historians and an exhibit of Virginia Indian artwork. This event is also part of the Dean William Parks Colloquium.
Jamestown 2007 Film Series: “Aguirre, The Wrath of God”
7 p.m. • Oct. 16 • Gaines Theater
The first film in CNU’s series commemorating Jamestown 2007 is set in South America in the mid-16th century. The film series screenings and post-movie discussions led by CNU faculty members are free and open to the public.
Homecoming Concert:
Better Than Ezra
9 p.m. • Oct. 21 • The Freeman Center
A New Orleans based rock-pop group, Better Than Ezra’s hits date as far back as the early 1990s (“Good,” “Roselia,” “Desperately Wanting”) and newer hits such as the Desperate Housewives theme song “Juicy,” “Lifetime” and “King of New Orleans.” Regional favorite Fighting Gravity also will appear. Student tickets are $5 with a valid CNU ID in advance and $7 the day of the show. Tickets are available to the general public beginning on Oct. 10 for $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Film Screening: “Goodbye, Lenin”

“Goodbye, Lenin,” a 2003 film directed by Wolfgang Becker, is the first film in the Russian and East European Film Series: Cinema After the Fall of the Berlin Wall, a series sponsored by the English Department Outreach Committee. Artist workshop, lecture, book-signing
Nov. 2-3 • Ferguson Center for the Arts and CNU Bookstore
Master wood-engraver and watercolor artist Barry Moser will conduct a workshop, lecture and book-signing on campus. All events are free and open to the public, but reservations are required for the workshop.
Shakespeare scholar to speak
3 p.m. • Nov. 13 • Ferguson Center for the Arts Studio Theatre
Dr. David Bevington, professor at the University of Chicago and a prominent Shakespeare scholar, will lecture on “The Perils of Courtship in Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Merchant of Venice and 12th Night.” This lecture is free and open to the public. |
